Neuroscience of Habit Formation: Research by Dr. Ann Graybiel at MIT has shown that habits are deeply ingrained in neural pathways, making them resistant to change. Part of the brain called the amygdala, which detects danger and controls our flight or fight response, sees change as a threat. Sometimes the thing you want to change is something you’ve been doing most of your life. The brain's reward system reinforces habitual behaviours, making it difficult to break free from established routines.
Cognitive Dissonance Theory: According to Leon Festinger's theory, individuals experience discomfort when their beliefs or behaviours are inconsistent with those around them. This creates resistance to change, as people try to maintain internal consistency and also avoid discomfort.
Fear of the Unknown: Psychologist Kurt Lewin's Change Theory emphasises that individuals often fear uncertainty and the unknown outcomes associated with change. This fear can lead to resistance, as people may prefer the perceived safety of their current situation over the uncertainty of change.
4. Comfort Zone Bias: Research by Dr. Wendy Wood at USC has shown that humans are inclined to stick to familiar patterns and environments, even if they are not ideal. This bias towards the comfort zone can make it challenging to step outside familiar territory and embrace change, even when it's beneficial.
5. Psychological Resistance to Loss: The work of Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky on Prospect Theory suggests that individuals are more opposed to losses than they are motivated by potential gains. Change is a loss and requires us to let go of old patterns, behaviours and beliefs, of familiar aspects of one's life. That can be really challenging and can trigger resistance and stop progress.

Debs was a wonderful life coach who helped me work through my biggest blockers in life by asking me impactful guiding questions. I would go into each session with roadblocks/issues and would come out with more clarity and action items to work on. She is excellent at holding a safe space where I felt very comfortable sharing my inner fears and insecurities. I would recommend Debs to any of my friends who are looking for a life coach.

Debs created a safe & reassuring space where I felt confident to share my doubts & insecurities. With thought provoking and considered questioning she guided me on a path of self-reflection. I met with Debs at a time when I was questioning a career change. Debs empowered & emboldened me to make that change. I am so grateful & I highly recommend working with Debs if you need support in making life changes.
